Our mission and what you can expect

About a month ago we relaunched our flagship line of bolt action pens with a new design, new name, and lots of new customers. Instead of sending a boring sales email asking you to buy our stuff, we thought it might be more interesting to talk about who we are and what we're about.

Let’s start with why we exist.

I started Tactile Turn seven years go just outside of Dallas because I hated the feeling that small-scale manufacturing was inaccessible to the average person and, as a result, we all have to settle for low-quality, consumer goods. We’ve become disconnected from the things we buy and rarely, if ever, take time to consider the person or people responsible for the creation.

To do something about that, I bought an old, WWII-era lathe, rented 160ft² in the corner of a friend’s workshop, and made 1,000 pens by hand which, thankfully, people wanted. And that’s it. That’s the story. Over time it’s led to improved designs, better machines, and a much bigger floor plan but, at the end of the day, we’re just a group of people doing our best to make durable, quality tools.

So, where do we go from here?

The plan is to keep doing more of the same, turning the finest raw materials into precision-machined products. That means more design tweaks, collaborations with friends in the community, and developing new products with your help, of course.

Sign up for our monthly emails if you'd like to be in on discussing new designs, nerding out about materials and machines, and being in the loop.

Until next time,
Will Hodges from Tactile Turn
